Morticians are Doctors Too

Hey guys! I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer! Since this is the first day since the last post I made that I have had a little time I thought I would give a little insight as to my job at the funeral home 😄

So, in all honesty my job can get a little crazy and as of now, the hours are unpredictable. I've come to the conclusion that Morticians are Doctors too, just for dead people. I work late a lot, come in early, there have even been times where I don't take a lunch because it's so busy or I'll be on lunch and get called to pick up a body. Once school starts I'll be working both graveyard shift from midnight to 8 am during the week and day shift from 8 am to 5 pm on weekends (since I'll be in school a majority of the day Monday-Thursday). It'll get a little crazy with having Pre-Calc and Anatomy [again], but I'm hoping to get some work done during grave when it's a slow night.

Regardless of the things I see on calls, the crazy hours, and the stories I've gained in the few months I've been here, I still love my job. It's super stressful about 90% of the time, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I've even had two of my old managers from Applebee's and a few of my old co-workers from there say they've decided they only want me to perform their removals, embalm them, and prep them for their funerals lol.

So that's a brief update on the job and I'll keep posting more as I go along 😊I have tons of stories from on the job, some "supernatural" and some from calls. So if you guys want to read some, I'll post them 😄

I hope you're all doing great, and ready to take on the next semester!

Summer Update

Hello everyone! I hope all of you are having a good summer so far (:

I'm still in the progress of my extension for IS101 (thanks for being so patient Mr. Wu).

So just an update: I'm more than happy to announce that I've finished my job at Applebee's and have kick started my career as a Mortician (: I got the job at Davis Funeral Home last month (with help from the kick ass cover letter and resume Mr. Wu helped me with) and have been there full time. I work currently as a Removal Technician (picking up bodies from hospitals, houses, hospices, and crime scenes) with the Clark County Coroner's Office, as a Prep Room Assistant getting the bodies dressed and ready for the funeral, and as a Funeral Assistant setting up for the funeral and talking to the families. It's been great so far and I'm loving it every day. I've been there a little over a month and a week now so it's taken up all of my time since school ended. They already have me training the new people that have been hired, so it's great being in an environment that realizes your hard efforts. I moved houses too and that's been great (:

Any who, keep cool out there guys! I hope everyone is enjoying their break and stay hydrated (:

Last Day

It's the last day and it feels bittersweet. I would love to get such a tough semester done with, but at the same time I genuinely enjoyed the classes I was in.

I hope everyone has a great summer! Stay safe guys, and keep your head up, always! (:

RedBull

As I sit in class fighting to stay awake I take one last sip of my RedBull and think "oh dear god that is disgusting!" Which leads me to wonder: why does the last sip of anything always taste so bad?

Semester Motivation Comic Strip

Okay guys here's the comic! It's taken a while to get done because I ended up losing the original and redid the comic (and it came out pretty crappy) but enjoy!

Slowly but Surely

Since I've been absent from IS (and other classes) for the past two weeks thanks to personal issues (being dealt with out of town) and a work injury I've been taking as much time as I can to catch up on all my work. I'm horribly behind and because of it I was thinking about the levels of motivation most people have during the semester. So in light of this I took a bit of a break from my Mount Everest-sized pile of homework and created a short comic strip about it. Once I've cleaned it up a bit and get home tonight I'll upload it on here and hope I can give all you guys a relateable chuckle.

Many Things in One

Okay, so I'm going to cram about 3 or so things into this post (just a heads up).

So, first of all I talked to the family I've been nannying for and they agreed to give me Thursdays off so that I can have at least one day out of the week to do whatever I need to do starting tomorrow (: and since Wednesday's I'm in school until midnight I'm using my in-between class time to catch up a little on IS, Anatomy, and a really awesome assignment I got for English where I have to choose a brand I've been loyal to for years and write a script or draw a picture of how the logo or products have changed. So because coffee is my life I chose Starbucks (:

Second: This Sunday I came home and my baby sister was really sick, so my mother took her to the doctor Monday morning and she had to be put on a respirator. The doctor insisted we bring one home so she can be put on it for one hour in the morning and one hour before bed. It made me a little upset that I couldn't be at the appointment to ease her but it was nice of my mother to FaceTime me so that my baby sister could talk to me while she was there. She's doing better now, her lungs were really congested and it made her unable to breathe well on her own, but with the respirator she's gotten back a good percentage of her normal lung capacity, which I'm very happy about. And for that I'd like to post a picture of her (:

Third: I was the idiot that tried to add a video to their PowerPoint and, in the end, couldn't send it to Prof. Wu. So in honor of my idiocy and you all not being able to see the video, I'm posting it on here (: The point I wanted to make with this video was to showcase the theatrical performances Motionless In White gives [that I was talking about] and also show Kylie Devyn's now-role in the band other that just being "Ghost's girlfriend". Enjoy all (: [oh and their music is a little loud so if loud isn't your thing you may want to turn the sound down a little, but give the instrumentals a listen because the synth/keyboard in the beginning is great].

The "Need A Vacation" Blues

Full disclosure: this is going to be a rant of things I need to get off my chest.

So, I like my second job, it pays decent and the kids aren't too much of a handful but good lord was I horribly wrong thinking I would get more time to myself. At this point in time I'm working 7 days a week (Sunday-Monday, sometimes both jobs on Saturday and Sunday since I don't  have school those nights) and my in and out times are changing so often I can't sleep without waking up every half hour.

I've been taking care of the little boy I signed up to originally take care of, his mom (who is recovering from a surgery), and his 6-year-old sister. I've been doing some housekeeping also, on top of buying their groceries and clothes and art stuff for the kids, and taking the 6-year-old to and from school. I'm home about 10% of the time (not even over exaggerating), which is leaving me little to no time to be with my baby sister (whom is more like my daughter) or let alone do homework.

At this point I just say it's about time for a vacation. And a 3-day nap!

A New Beginning

I just got a second job as a Nanny for a 3-year-old boy. It feels so much better working with children than at a restaurant. I'm happy to announce that with this second job I've reduced my days at the restaurant and will hopefully have a little more time on my hands (:

I Don't Really Know How to Title This Post (:

I'm sitting in the library working on homework for all my classes before my English 102 class starts and it really makes me wish I had more time to spend doing this sort of thing at school or just in a library. It would be great if I could do what I did a few years back and just sit here doing work hours before my classes start and after they end.

I have a younger sister that's 16 and she's in the CSN High School program here at the Charleston campus. She doesn't drive just yet so it gets hectic arranging my schedule so I can take her home, to work, etc. But at least she's as driven as I am to be working towards her diploma and Associate of Science in Dentistry at the same time. Makes me really proud of her (:

Academic Goal- Associate of Science (AS)

I chose to be a science major because I want to go on to Graduate school at some point and be a Mortician/Medical Examiner. My academic adviser said an AS degree would transfer with me when I move away to a University with the program that I need, so it was the better option. Right now, I'm expected to graduate by 05/2019, if I'm able to continue attending school full-time and taking summer courses. I'm halfway through with the necessary credits to graduate already and my counselor and I have made sure that the classes I've signed up for are similar to the classes offered at a school with a Mortuary or Forensic Science program.

People

To be completely honest, I don't like dealing with people. Which sucks because as a bartender/host I have to deal with them a lot. Especially the rude and drunken ones that continuously try to pick me up. If you're miserable, don't go out and infect others with your misery. That's just the worst experience I've had working in a restaurant (aside from the constant running around and no breaks part). This further makes sense as to why I've chosen to be a Mortician/Medical Examiner as my career; minimal people, and they're mostly dead so I don't think they'll complain too much.

Opening Shifts

Working 7:00 am-3:00 pm only sucks because of the the "waking up" part of the day. I bet a lot of people can relate on that! By the time any of my classes are about to start I just want to lay down for a nap haha.

Creativity

Art is a huge passion of mine and lately I've been feeling really creative but once I can take a break and get to my sketch book the idea is gone. How annoying. It's like writer's block but for art haha.

Ready for a New Semester

The start of the Spring 2017 semester is into it's second week! It's exciting to be back in school and getting to take classes I'm actually excited to take. IS101 so far seems like a really fun course and it seems like I'm going to learn a lot. English 102 seems great also; my professor is really easy going and the assignments we have so far aren't overwhelming, which is a nice change. Bio223--Anatomy & Physiology--is the one class I'm excited about most, being a science major and all.

It's great to have professors that are passionate about the subjects they teach, promising to be a great semester.
